Birth Year Watches: Finding a Vintage Watch From the Year You Were Born

Imagine handing someone a watch and telling them it was made in the same month they were born. It's been around exactly as long as they have, and it'll keep going for years after the box is opened.

That's the idea behind a birth year watch, and it's one of the most personal gifts we know of. Vintage Seiko makes it possible, because most of them can be dated to the month from the caseback.

Why a birth year watch means more

A watch is already a thoughtful present. One made in the year someone was born comes with a story they'll tell for years: “it's the same age as me.” Nobody else will have the same one, and unlike most presents, it gets worn.

It works well beyond birthdays. A watch from the year you met or married makes a lovely anniversary present. For a 30th, 40th or 50th, the 80s and 90s are the sweet spot, and that's exactly when Seiko made some of its prettiest ladies' watches.

How we date them

Seiko stamped a serial number on every caseback. The first digit gives the year, the second gives the month, and the calibre tells you the decade. We use it to date every Seiko we can, and put the month and year in the listing title. The full method is in our guide to dating a vintage Seiko from its serial number.

Other brands are harder to pin down so precisely, so if the exact year matters, Seiko is the place to start.

Birth year watches for the 1980s

The 80s were Seiko's most decorative years for ladies' watches: heart-link bracelets, small gem-set dials and the elegant Lassale line.

Birth year watches for the 1990s

Early 90s Seikos lean towards diamond bezels, champagne and mother of pearl dials, and the occasional unusual shape.

A few tips before you buy

Start looking early if there's a date to hit, because a particular year can take time to come up. Be flexible about the month. The year alone is special enough, and the exact month is a bonus. Check the bracelet length against one they already wear, since vintage ladies' watches run small. And add Ekiztas gift packaging to your order, with a note explaining the date. It's the part people remember.
